Viagra is a well-known medication prescribed to men who have difficulty with erectile dysfunction (ED) and for whom it is not a viable treatment option.
Researchers from the University of Texas Medical Branch and the University of California, Davis, studied the effectiveness of a placebo-controlled, double-blind, randomised trial of Viagra (sildenafil citrate), a prescription drug that has been in use for more than two decades, in a group of men who have ED. The results showed a statistically significant improvement in ED symptoms and a reduction in the likelihood of sexual arousal compared to the placebo group.
Viagra has since become the go-to treatment for many men with ED. It is often prescribed as a treatment for those men who do not respond to conventional ED medications.
The trial was designed to test the effectiveness of Viagra in men who have difficulty with erectile dysfunction. The results were presented at a meeting of the American College of Cardiology in 1998, and were published in the August 1 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.
Viagra has been widely used as a treatment for ED, but research into its efficacy in men with ED is not as extensive as earlier research, said Amy Schofield, of the University of Texas Medical Branch and lead investigator on the trial.
“It’s important to understand why Viagra is so expensive and to be sure, it was not a magic bullet,” she said. “It was not an aphrodisiac.”
The study involved approximately 4,000 men with ED who were randomly assigned to receive a placebo pill or Viagra or a placebo pill with a daily dose of 30 mg.
The men were followed for up to four months to assess the efficacy and tolerability of the treatment. The men were then followed for a year, and their ED symptoms were assessed.
Researchers noted that Viagra had a positive effect on the ability to produce erections and an improved ability to maintain erections. Viagra, however, had a negative effect on erection quality and quality of life, as well as on sexual desire and satisfaction.
“We were very surprised to learn that it was not a magic bullet,” said Amy Schofield.
“The fact that Viagra was a placebo in this study means that we can see that the trial is flawed.”
The researchers were unable to find any studies that directly demonstrated the benefits of Viagra for ED.
The researchers were also unable to determine if Viagra would be a better treatment for ED. They used the results of a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind study of Viagra in men with ED who had been referred to a primary care physician. The men were assigned to receive either the placebo pill or a daily dose of Viagra, in addition to a placebo pill.
The results showed that men who took Viagra showed statistically significant improvement in the ability to achieve erections and an improvement in sexual desire, compared to those who took placebo pills, but were still at a higher risk of a return of erection, such as priapism, which is a serious medical emergency.
Researchers noted that men taking Viagra were able to maintain penile erections more than men who did not respond to traditional ED medications. This may be because they had difficulty with traditional ED drugs.
“The results of this study support the theory that Viagra is effective in men with ED and that a low dose of Viagra in the trial could have a positive effect on ED symptoms,” said Amy Schofield.
Researchers noted that men with ED had a longer time to ejaculate and a lower probability of spontaneous ejaculation compared to those who had never taken ED medications.
